"Crazy Pizza Day" by Bonnie Dobkin
One of the drastic changes that occurred at my workplace due to the pandemic is the interaction between the students. It’s hard for three to four-year-olds to be socially distanced since playing with other children is important in their overall development. Even though they have to be away from one another, the other teachers and I thought that creating socially distant activities could help. Crazy Pizza Day by Bonnie Dobkin describes the day a restaurant decided to offer any topping the customer wants. All toppings for a pizza will be made available, and every desire will be fulfilled. The customers that arrive at the restaurant are unusual, and their choice of toppings even more. Thus, results in the children interacting with each other. They also go on to describe what toppings they like on their pizza. By the end of the book, the children are laughing, questioning how dirt, tools, and insects are edible. They then create their own pizza and do a show and tell to explain why their toppings are the best. Even the quietest child in the class speaks so much whenever this book is chosen for circle time.
