Kids Corner!
If you're struggling to find books for a little one, the books listed below are a good place to start. These books are entertaining while dealing with topics that might be a little harder to grapple for younger children. These books center around acceptance of oneself, self love, colorism and decision making. I’ve read these to my nephew and they have helped him become more understanding and empathetic towards himself and others who are different from him.
Sulwe, Written by Lupita Nyong’o and illustrated by Vashti Harrison
“Sulwe has skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.”
I Am Perfectly Designed by Karamo (Queer Eye) and Jason Brown, Illustrated by Anoosh Syed.
This father and son duo write a heartwarming story about loving yourself just as you are. Their two characters walk through the city of New York as they point out why they make a perfect team.
What Should Darla Do? Written by Adir & Ganit Levy and illustrated by Doreen Kaiser.
In this interactive book, you get to decide what happens next through a series of questions. This book teaches children that their choices have consequences and that thinking things through before acting impulsively could help you avoid conflict with others.
“Darla is a young and spunky astronaut-in-training. She wants to go to Mars one day, just like her favorite doll, Astronautica. But before she does, she will need to learn to navigate through relatable scenarios that so many kids face on a daily basis. Written in a "Choose Your Own Story" format, your kids can help Darla through her day by making choices for her! There are eight stories in one, so the fun never ends!”
