Student Philanthropy Week

CPP’s annual Student Philanthropy week has just come to a close. For anyone unaware of this is, it is a fundraising initiative put on by the Student Philanthropy club. According to their website, the club “aims to educate students about philanthropy, awareness, and increase giving activity among the student body.” This year the club’s fundraising focus was the Basic Needs Initiative that served students in need. A major branch of this initiative is the Mobile Food Pantry which gives out free toiletries and food on campus once a month. The impetus for this initiative was a CSU study published in January 2018 which found that 41% of CSU students don’t have consistent access to healthy food. A staggering number, further demonstrating the importance of Student Philanthropy week.

In order to raise support and awareness, the Student Philanthropy Club held multiple events on campus during the week. One of the events was called “Slice of the Pie”. This was to raise awareness to the fact that ONE-THIRD of the university’s entire budget comes from private donations. State funding and tuition only cover two-thirds. At the event they gave out free Round Table pizza and I was able to catch up with the club’s sponsor Jorge Garduño who said, “Our purpose is to educate students  on the importance of philanthropy and letting them know that making a donation whether big or small makes a huge impact.” Jorge graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies from CPP in 2017 and now is Phonathon Coordinator at the Annual Fund. The club was accepting donations on campus as well as online. They had their own crowdfunding page with different giving levels at $5, $25, $41, and $100. In total, they were able to raise $595 for students in need thanks to the 77 donors, far surpassing their goal of 50 donors! President of the club Sean Rochford said, “student philanthropy week was a success, it was great to see so many students that understood and appreciated what philanthropy has done for our school.”

The week was a huge success in raising awareness among the student body of the importance of giving. The next fundraising initiative will be Giving Day, held in April. This event is primarily targeted towards alumni, but students are encouraged to donate as well. If anyone would like to make a donation they can anytime at: give.cpp.edu
